In an effort to share Cuesta College faculty expertise with fellow faculty, staff and the community, the college will hold a Faculty Lecture Series on October 27 titled “Sustainable Seafood: What You Should Know About the Seafood You Eat” at 3:30 p.m. on the San Luis Obispo Campus in the Biology Forum (room 2401).

Biology instructor Steve Hendricks will lead the lecture and discuss the best seafood choices, healthy versus unhealthy seafood, commercial fishing methods and their impact on the marine environment, and more. In addition, Hendricks will guide a field trip in Morro Bay on October 29, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

“My goal is to empower folks to make healthy seafood choices that also help sustain the world’s fisheries and the marine environment,” said Hendricks, who will mainly discuss locally caught seafood. “The field trip to Morro Bay will include a look at several different types of fishing gear and discussing the pros and cons of each, chatting with commercial fishermen we run into, and then we’ll finish up at Tognanzzini's Dockside Restaurant to discuss commercial fishing with owner and local fisherman Mark Tognanzzini, who will fillet a couple of fish for us to sample.”

The lecture and field trip are free to the public, however space is limited. Reservations are required for the field trip. Members of the public interested in attending either the lecture and/or field trip are encouraged to call ahead at (805) 546-3100, ext. 2659, or email lbaxley@cuesta.edu.

The college launched the Faculty Lecture Series in February of 2016 with the goal of hosting three lectures each semester. According to Cuesta College Academic Senate president and chemistry instructor Dr. Lara Baxley, “the intent of the Faculty Lecture Series is to share the vast and interesting knowledge of various faculty members, while providing a sense of community, and allowing the opportunity for faculty, staff, students and the public to come and learn about Cuesta College’s many disciplines.”

The Faculty Lecture Series is cosponsored by the college’s Academic Senate and office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
