GEOLOGIC HAZARDS? WE'VE GOT EM!

Air photo of Big Sur Landslide.

Landslides are a huge problem along the central coast. A particularly nasty area north along the Big Sur Coast is prone to almost constant movement. The road is often closed during the wet season. Here we see just one of several large failures there that provide job security to roadway engineers and constant headaches for local residents.

A more typical and smaller type of failure called an "earthflow" has caused a minor disturbance to the Cayucos cemetery. below.

Great place for a cemetery! Just place the casket in the flow path and wait a few years. No digging necessary! On the other hand, this might not be such a good spot for a hillside home. Junior geologist Ashlyn Grover (age 11) helps to point out the landslide.
