HIGHWAY 41. WILD GEOLOGY!

Road cut along Highway 41 Do you drive Highway 41 on your way to Cuesta College? If so you might wonder what’s going on here at the "BIG ROAD CUT". Let’s take a closer look.

We’re in the guts of an ancient mid-ocean spreading ridge in the middle of an Ophiolite sequence. Make sense? If so then you probably don’t need our introductory geology courses. We’ll keep it simple here and point out that these rocks are igneous intrusions or "dikes" that were once the conduits for magma that fed a deep-sea volcanic ridge. Here’s another look below.
