STRANDED SEA ARCHES? |

If you noticed this arch at Mallagh Landing (Pirates Cove), youve got more on your mind than the nude sunbathers on the beach below. The arch was cut by wave action about 100,000 years ago when the land was lower and/or the sea level was higher. That's the ocean in the background and about 50 feet below the arch. The waves took advantage of a small fault (see arrow) that weakened the rock. The piddock clam dug small holes in the rock at the base of the arch (see the photo below). This clam species still lives in the intertidal zone of local waters.
