WHAT'S THAT GREEN ROCK? |

Look around and you will notice a shiny green (a bit blue here) rock exposed through out the county. Heres an example located just south of San Luis Obispo along Hwy. 101. This is the California state rock called serpentine or serpentinite. This rock is rare, except in areas of complex geology. We see a lot of it near Cuesta. Take a closer look below. |

| Serpentine is an altered form of the earths mantle and has a slippery, snake-like surface (hence the name). It is composed of several minerals including minor amounts of chrysotile a somewhat benign form of asbestos. A small vein of chrysotile is visible in the close up photo on the right (see the arrow).
