STEPS TO THE SEA

Marine terraces in Montana de Oro.

Another central coast gem is Montana de Oro State Park. One of its many attractions is the beautifully preserved marine terraces. We’re looking south here so the modern shoreline is to the right, just out of our field of view. The terraces are uplifted wave-cut benches. Twelve have been identified in the general area and we see three (maybe four) in this photo above (note the numbers). Radiometric and amino acid racimization analysis on fossils within the terrace deposits indicate that the benches were formed #1, 80,000, #2, 120,000, and #3, 210,000 years ago. What does this information suggest about the stability of the region?
