Philosophy

Philosophy is an academic discipline that inquires into the nature, meaning, and value of the world and of human beings’ place in the world.

At its core, philosophy challenges students to think deeply about fundamental questions while sharpening critical thinking, reasoning, and communication skills. By exploring diverse perspectives and traditions, philosophy provides tools to analyze complex problems, make sound arguments, and reflect on personal and societal values. These skills are highly transferable, preparing students for careers in law, education, business, public service, and beyond.

An undergraduate major in philosophy prepares a student for:

  1. graduate studies and an academic career in philosophy,
  2. graduate studies and an academic career in related disciplines within the humanities (e.g., religious studies, literature, political science), and
  3. law school and a career in law or politics.
